Jio, also known as Reliance Jio, is the leading mobile network service provider in India. Unlike many carriers worldwide, they only offering 4G LTE connectivity but do so across all 22 telecom circles in the country. Moreover, the carrier is well-known for its line of branded devices, consisting of old-school phones, smartphones, and hotspot devices. As such, the demand for buying their SIM card is significant, as are the instructions to complete the activation process. Well, we can help you with the latter, at least. Without further ado, here’s how to activate the Jio SIM card.
1. Activate Jio SIM card
Regardless if you acquired the Jio SIM card at the store or had a representative deliver it to your doorstep, you must complete a short set of steps. Here’s how the activation of a Jio SIM card works:
- Insert a SIM card you received.
- Wait for the tele-verification SMS to arrive.
- Tip. If it’s a new phone number, it will take a few hours after you completed the registration process. If you ported your number from another carrier, it will typically take between 2 to 5 days.
- Call 1977 if you want to activate all services. Otherwise, dial 1800-890-1977 (toll-free), to only enable mobile data services.
- Now, follow the instructions the voice machine gives you.
- Enter a 5-digit PIN sent to an alternate phone number you own. Or, you can enter the last 4 digits of your Aadhar card or Voter ID, depending on what you submitted as Proof of Identity.
- After that’s finished, Jio services will be activated within 1 to 4 hours.
2. Activate an expired Jio SIM card
Jio will deactivate a SIM card after 90 days of inactivity. You have 15 days after the deactivation to re-activate the SIM card, or else your phone number will be recycled. Reactivation can only be done at the Jio store, so use their Store Locator feature. Don’t forget to bring your documents – Aadhar card or Voter ID (Proof of Identity) and any document that contains Proof of Address.
3. Can I switch from prepaid to postpaid Jio SIM card?
Yes, you can switch from a prepaid SIM card for Jio to a Jio postpaid SIM card and vice versa without losing your phone number. The process is identical to reactivating an expired SIM. Also, you might not have to use method 1 afterward.
