U Mobile is a renowned Malaysian provider of telecommunications services, making activation of their SIM card important. Jointly owned by U Telemedia alongside ST Media, the carrier earned a great reputation for offering “unlimited ideas to challenge the status quo”. They meant it literally! U Mobile is currently the only mobile network carrier in Malaysia that offers unlimited data usage plans, which oftentimes come bundled with high-speed Internet. As if that wasn’t enough, they are well-known for keeping prices low and supplying diversity. They offer prepaid and postpaid SIM plans and are accommodating toward different needs. With that, let’s show you how to activate a U Mobile SIM card.

1. Finish U Mobile activation automatically

Did you purchase a U Mobile SIM card via their website, i.e., through their Online Store page? If so, U Mobile will activate your SIM card automatically in 48 hours, starting from the moment they detect the Online Store package arrived at your destination. You’ll also receive an e-mail receipt as confirmation.

A common point of confusion is whether you must perform a top-up to complete the procedure. The answer is no. A small top-up you bought alongside the plan (RM50 in most cases) will be added to your payment plan automatically, and activation proceeds regardless.

2. Activate SIM card you got from U Mobile online

Impatient or in a hurry to start using all the services U Mobile offers? Not a problem—that’s something the carrier knows happens from experience. For that reason, they designed a quick online process to kick-start the activation procedure. Follow these steps to activate SIM card from U Mobile online:

  1. Head over to the U Mobile Self-Care Portal page.
  2. Sign in using the credentials you got when making the Online Order, namely SIM card phone number.
  3. Note. If you never logged in before, check the “First Time Login” section below. Click on the Click here to retrieve your PIN link, and you’ll receive further instructions.
  4. Now that you entered the phone number and PIN (Personal Identification Number), click on Login.
  5. Open the drop-down menu to expand all options. Select the Activation History option.
  6. You’ll now see a column mentioning the status of the SIM card. Click on Activate.
  7. Insert the SIM card if you wish. Regardless of what you do, U Mobile will activate the SIM card they gave you in under two hours.

3. Feel like activating U Mobile SIM card via the MyUMobile app? Do this

Like many carriers out there, U Mobile has a dedicated smartphone application, MyUMobile, available for Android, iOS, and HUAWEI’s AppGallery. Such software is usually dedicated to managing your account, including top-ups, balance checking, getting various loyalty rewards, and transferring the balance to other users. However, like some others, they’ve added the possibility to complete the activation procedure to streamline the lengthy procedure of submitting personal information. Not only for Malaysian citizens, like is the case in countries with a high degree of cybercrime. Non-Malaysians can also register for a SIM in the same fashion.

With all that acknowledged, SIM card activation for U Mobile works this way:

  1. Insert the SIM card into your phone if you wish. This is not mandatory, since you can initiate the procedure from a different SIM card and a separate, even non-U Mobile phone number.
  2. Install the MyUMobile app for iOS, Android, or HarmonyOS 2.
  3. Open the app and tap the New Line Self-Registration option at the bottom.
  4. You’ll now see a picture detailing the location of the barcode you need to scan. Take your full-size SIM card and take a picture of the back side using your phone’s camera.
  5. With that confirmed, the app asks you to confirm your identity by taking a picture of your ID. Malaysians can snap a picture of myPR, MyTentera, MyKad, or MyKAS. People without Malaysian citizenship can photograph their passports. Take them in good lighting, so information is clearly visible.
  6. With that approved, all that’s left is to take a selfie. Make sure your face fits into the cutout, and, preferably, resembles your ID picture.
  7. If you did everything right, you’ll see a “Your Registration’s Successful!” message.

4. WeChat users can activate U Mobile SIM card this way

Well, to be more specific, WeChat users that are using a prepaid SIM card and one of the suitable packs, can. One notable example is the Unlimited FUNZ Prepaid Pack, which provides the aforementioned benefits of unmetered data and high speeds. Moreover, there are two ways to complete the activation of U Mobile SIM cards through WeChat:

1. Using QR code to enable U Mobile prepaid SIM pack

Unsurprisingly, you must first purchase the data pack online or from their store. After it arrives (physically or through e-mail), do this:

  1. Launch your WeChat application from Google Play (Android) or App Store (iOS).
  2. On the home screen, tap the + icon.
  3. Select the Scan option. A QR code scanner part of the application will open.
  4. Hover over the QR code on the back of the SIM card. Once it’s in the frame, the app will load it.
  5. With details analyzed, you can tap on the Start button to begin your registration.
  6. The rest of the steps are similar to the one above. You’ll have to select the type of ID and take a picture of whichever ID you selected. Follow this by entering the personal details they ask for. Finish by taking a picture of your face, and you should get a successful registration message.

Note. If you have another U Mobile phone number to activate, you can save yourself time and effort by tapping the Activate Another Line button and simply attaching the number to this user account.

2. Utilizing WeChat Search to turn on U Mobile SIM 

The other method of going through WeChat for registration is a tad more tedious. That’s because you must utilize the custom mini-programs feature inside the app. Here’s how the process looks:

  1. Open WeChat on your Android or iOS/iPadOS device.
  2. Tap on Discover.
  3. Choose the Mini Programs option.
  4. Tap the icon of the magnifying glass.
  5. Search for “u prepaid registration” and select U Prepaid Registration from search results.
  6. When the page opens, tap on Start.
  7. Proceed to do everything we explained in step 6. The same thing we noted about linking a second phone number is possible in this case as well.
