How to Remove a SIM Card from iPhone

iPhone SIM

Got an old iPhone sitting around or bought a second-hand model, and need to pull out the SIM card? No problem, the process isn’t as hard as you might think. You already have an example of a SIM card size, should you decide to do SIM swapping. This is not mandatory, of course. Only change a SIM card if you want to continue using the phone or if the previous SIM card isn’t working. If you want to sell the phone or gift it to someone, taking it out is where you should stop. With that clarified, here’s how to remove a SIM card from iPhone.

How to pick the right SIM card size replacement?

The first Apple iPhone, released in June 2007, and Apple iPhone3G, released in July 2008, use a mini-SIM card. The next release, Apple iPhone 4, uses a micro-SIM card. Newer iPhone models, starting with Apple iPhone 5, released on September 21, 2012, started using a nano-SIM card.

The important thing is, the process of inserting a SIM card into the SIM card slot remained the same from the very beginning.  There’s also a strong possibility you won’t need to do take out a SIM card ever again. With newer models, Apple started transitioning to the embedded-SIM card.

Steps to eject a SIM card from iPhone

  1. Open the package your phone arrived in.
  2. Find the SIM card removal tool and take it out.
  3. Look for the SIM card tray.
    • On iPhone to iPhone 3G/3GS, it is on the top of the phone.
    • On iPhone 4 and later, it is on the right side of the phone.
  4. Look for a tiny dot-sized hole next to the tray.
  5. Insert the pointy end of the SIM card ejector tool into the hole and press lightly.
  6. You’ll hear a faint noise, and the tray will open by a millimeter.
  7. Use your fingernails to pull the tray out.
  8. Turn the tray around so that the SIM card falls out.
  9. Optional. Insert a replacement SIM card (prepaid or postpaid)
  10. Push the tray back in.
  11. Press on it until it gets locked in place.

Now that it’s out, you can put the SIM card into another phone to import whatever is stored on it, keep it for sentimental purposes, or just notify the carrier to disable it, then throw it away.
